GSM radio waves - 35km limitation (1 Viewer)

Can someone please explain why GSM phones cannot work over a distance of more than 35km?
Much appreciated because all the things i have read just confuse me and i have an assesment on wednesday :-|

lol, i dont remember that either, will probably learn about next yr in a communications uni course, but by then it will be too late to help lol

35km is pretty long..

If you use the inverse square law, the intensity is only 1/35000^2 of it's strength at 1 metre.
