My hard disk constantly locks up, like there's a beep, then the hdd LED light goes on and everything on the screen freezes.
It's stops for about 3 seconds, then it's alrite again.

It does it about every 2 minutes and it's really starting to piss me off.

Does anyone know how I could fix the problem and whether this is a sign of harddisk failure? So i can quickly backup all the music I have.

Thanks

What model of hard drive is it?

Usually, if you can hear a sound, then thats a sign its dying. Best backup the data, and prepare for the worst.

I know the IBM ones used to die after a few years, where it'd just overheat. Others the actual physical disk might have been damaged.

i think it's more because you have some kind of software seeking the harddrive and taking priority over all your other processes

Perhaps post a hijackthis scan log on here and lets eliminate software problems.

I don't think it's been hijacked and the problem mysteriously stopped.

So yeh. Thank you all for your help.

If anymore problems, I'll just send it back to the place I bought it. Also I backed up all my data on DVD's. So yeh all good.

Thanks

Sounds like my drive. Same model & setup. Mine was doing a similar thing, and then it died. Worked after a day of having it off, then completely died. I'd suggest you back up immediately everything vital, just in case.

Well everything vital is backed up.

Except It'd be hard for me trying to prove it to the computer shop i bough it from.

Thats the only problem.

I took mine back, they did diagnostics for a few days and said it was fine. Took it home, a few days later it started making these "whirrrrrr... click" noises and jamming the computer when it did so, then the computer froze. Goodbye 160gb :(

I misread your post too, sorry. Mine was a 160gb drive, not 120.
