Different apparatus, yes. Different method, not really. The fuel is still burnt to heat water, and change in temperature measured.TimeAndTide said:How the hell can you work out an error percentage in these? The sources probably used a differnt appartus and method than yours.
You also have that it isn't pure ethanol. Since it is way too expensive for schools to acquire if they have to keep doing it. Alot cheaper just to use a 95% ethanol solution.~*HSC 4 life*~ said:- heat loss to surroundings

Not to mention illegal to have 100% alcohol. Unless there are exclusions for schools, I'm not sure. My pop got fined for making grapa in his garage which apparently is also illegal.Xayma said:You also have that it isn't pure ethanol. Hahahaha...classic! Our old teacher used to get bored teaching us stuff, so he let us set up a bunsen burner and blow corn flour over it, making this mad flame thrower thingy. Fire...mheh heh mheh.Slide Rule said:We did this prac at my school. The teacher got called on his mobile and then everybody got sick of it and put all their ethanol/butanol/propanol together to form a big fire. The ceilling was scorched and when he came back they couldn't put it out, so he sat their grinning at their stupidity as they did things like whack it with books to put it out. In the end they put it out... haha.
