Ok so my formal is coming up and the dress code is 'Cocktail'. I'm really not sure what that implies.
Does that mean that I don't need to wear a tie? Is it ok to have wear a suit without a tie?

I'd really like some help here.

There is actually no real 'cocktail' code, but for this type of situation I'd probably wear a nice suit with a spread collar and tie. You can always take the tie off later through the night.

Usually "formal" implies a suit and tie.
whereas "cocktail" is more of suit pants, nice collared open shirt, no need for a tie.

these days, you'll find more boys in a collared open shirt with no ties.

Agreed, but you can still take a nice tie just in case everyone else wears one...they don't take up much room.

yeah cocktail is a little more casual than 'formal' i am a MASSIVE fan of cream pants, tan shoes and browns or greens in shirts at the moment.. so strange..

you know what bugs me soooooo much!? when guys wear nice pantseg suit pants and nice shoes and then wear SPORT SOCKS...... ARGH! they ruin EVERYTHING!

PLEASE boys.. buy some dress socks that match the colour of your pants for dressy occasions! it makes an outfit look a zillion times better
