Hmm... Haven't read The Crucible but have read Animal Farm. Umm... Well, you coiuld sort of relate it back to Foucault (sp?), whose doctrine is the whole Power/Might thing and stuff about truths made up by the power-holders can be more important than the 'real' truth. I dunno... I can't do this without relating it back to other random texts... Like in Spiderman, when the Green Goblin comments that the masses are just there to lift up the few, that's sort of in Animal Farm. Oh, yeah, education is important, cos no-one could read the rules on the wall bar one animal (some goat or something, can't recall) so the evil pig (whose name I can't remember) could control the stupid animals... The whole ending bit, you could say that power turns everyone into greedy, self-serving pigs, or something related to how power affected those animals/humans in the room at the end (I am so redudant)... Ummm... Well, there's some random ideas to get you started. :)

uhh...i've read both but i dont remember much of animal farm.
in the crucible abigail has ultimate power over salem coz she's managed to convince basically every1 in the town about who the witches are even though its all a lie. shes just messing with their lives and she's the one who's sent all those innocent ppl to their deaths so she's got heaps of power. proctor has some power, but abby manages to outsmart him. the judge has the power to stop the hangings but he's too afraid to admit he's wrong...that's about all i can remember...i didnt really focus on the power thing coz i was studying conflict...
hope it helps

I've only read Animal Farm, but it basically says that ultimate power corrupts people (surprise, surprise). That's why Orwell wrote it- he was concerned with Stalin's totalitarian rule, so he made an allegory about the Russian Revolution.

point to use

*abigails power through deceit (physical power over the girls)
there coperation gives her even more power

*danforth power of life..(ultimate power)

nup[.. i dun think so..

necrospern: i believe that your assessment will be on the concience and authority (this is my module)..

i think danforth and hale have authority.. as it is a theocratic society then..
procter has power, if he didn't he wouldn't have been involved in the witchcraft trials..?
animal farm is good because it shows a similar concept- that is shown in the crucible..

proctor wasn't involved in the witchcraft he was bloody convicted!!..he had pride true he has self respect...true but power? he was hanged infront of his wife he was powerless he couldnt control or influence anyone he had NO SAY in what happened to him

HE HAD NO POWER!!!!!
dont let others lose marks from your petty generalisation and assumptions

i have to write a similar essay on af and crucible

i have to do study animal farm and the crucible for yr 11 prelims this year and i have to go in and write an essay tomorrow. the half yearly exam essay question was to compare the two stories

u have to talk about symbolism of how the crucible is used as a symbol for the court, which is supposd to purify the town as the crucible does to metals. Also write about all the charcater and who they are all suposed to stand for (ie girls stand for senator J McCarthy) In AF write who the cahracters stand for stalin/ napoleon, snowball/trotsky, the dogs/stalin's secret police.

when you talk of power talk about how when you have too much power u abuse it when senator mcCarthy had power all he did was want to keep it and hurt people with it, thats the same with the crucibel wehn the girls ahd power over all the towns people, all they did was blame people they didnt like (ie Abigail with Elizabeth proctor). in AF the pigs had too much power which was abused especially towards the end which is evident also in the russian revolution when Stalin abused his high position and social status to his own advantage and not that for what socialism stands for. he even made historians and authors of textbooks re write history to make it seem that he had a bigger role then he really did.

remeber its quality not quantity and, make sure u write a plan before u start the essay so you dunt have ur ideas all jumbled up and not in any particular order.
heres one u might want to use

Intro
af and c show power in many ways etc. (introduce ur ideas, dont write naything in ur essay thats not in ur intro)

body

1. abuse of power in c

2. abuse of power in af

3. symbolism and who abuses power in c

4. symbolism and who abuses power in af

conclusion
sim. to intro but rephrase (for eg therfore in conclusion af and c have many instances where the cahracters are shown to use or misuse power...)
