Bored of Studies - Site Help would have been the proper section, but anyway:

User CP (Control Panel) - you will find this at the very top of your window, next to Register.

Edit Options (third from the left)

At the very bottom, you will find Avatar
Now click Change Avatar...

From there, everything will be fairly easy to understand. :)

See the picture you attached earlier in this thread?

That was a gif. (named flirt.gif)

I assume this is the file you want to attach.

They are file extensions, JPG and GIF refer to image file types. ("pictures")

You can only attach such file-types as your "picture" (avatar) on the forum.

Correct,

GIF = Graphics Interchange Format.

If cleopatra wanted to know, (though I don't know why you'd want to really know):

JPEG = Joint Picture Expert Group
(MPEG stands for Movie PEG)

Use tag's.

Host the image externally and hot-link it back to your signature via [img] tags.

Find some webspace, upload the image.

Now, go back into your Control Panel.
Use the tag's, for example:

(img)[url]http://www.boredofstudies.org/natstar/nat.jpg[/url](/img)

(where the brackets are replaced with square brackets [ ] 's).

That's it :)

Go to your ISP's user tookbox and find the link to your included webspace (most plans have a little bit that gets ignored). If you upload your images here you can set image tags [ img ] [ /img ] to display the image. Thus, you upload your desired image to the ISP's webspace (the toolkit FAQ will tell you how) and find it's URL (address). Then you stick that URL between the image tags (sans spaces) and when someone sees your signature the image uploaded to your webspace will appear.
