Help Me Decide on a Career (2 Viewers)

Hi everyone. I am currently studying commerce and engineering but I dont know exactly which employment pathway (either in finance or economics) I wish to pursue after I graduate. I am really interested in equities markets, investing, and general economic conditions and climate. I also enjoy looking at graphs and tables.

Which commerce positions do you think best suit me? Some of the options I have thought about are include working as an economist, equities trader, financial planner, financial analyst and a fund manager.

In addition to this, which companies do you suggest are good options for me? Please list quite a few for me to consider.

Mate you just described investment banking (i don't necessarily mean corporate fin, but IB in general). You've got the degree for it too.

What about working as an economist? Or working in government or a retail bank such as CBA? Would that be as good an option for me?

economist jobs are either good, or very very bad.

good ones in my opinion: chief economist of a bank, governor of RBA, professor of economics, investment banker, treasurer
bad ones in my opinion: mostly everything else

i personally wouldn't go financial planning either, even though its fairly lucrative with all the boomers retiring and such.

turtleface: What do you mean by bad ones?

In general, i'd say govt and retail banking (this does not include IB/insto depts of the big4 banks) are less pay/less hours than IB.

On a slightly unrelated note (though it may affect your decision): Bernanke's net wealth is only around 2 mil USD! (can't remember the exact figure but i'm pretty sure it was below 2 mil)

i used my own willingness to work in those jobs as a measure of "badness"

but its my personal preference of course. i'm sure people who are into economics are more into it

lets say you finish up with an econ degree/major - is it hard to find work compared to finance?
