I'm pretty confused about choosing my first year subjects for Bachelor of Commerce. I want to do a double major in Finance and Economics and my enrolment is on Wednesday, so I've looked through the requirements for those majors and the units of study guide on the USYD website.

Five core junior subjects exist for the degree:
- BUSS1001
- BUSS1002
- BUSS1020
- BUSS1030
- BUSS1040

The four junior prerequisites for a major in Economics are:
- BUSS1020 Quantitative Business Analysis (no prereqs)
- ECMT1020 Business and Economic Statistics B (BUSS1020 prereq)
- ECON1001 Introductory Microeconomics (no prereqs)
- ECON1002 Introductory Macroeconomics (no prereqs)

Junior recommended units for Finance major overlap with the Economics prerequisites, so no worries :)

The guide for my pattern of study suggests this order for the junior units:
YR1 SEM1:
- BUSS1001
- BUSS1030
- BUSS1040
- ECON1001

YR1 SEM2:
- BUSS1002
- BUSS1020
- ECON1002
- Free Junior Elective

YR2 SEM1:
-ECMT1020

I created my own order which will allow me to complete all junior units in first year:
YR1 SEM1:
- BUSS1001
- BUSS1020
- BUSS1030
- BUSS1040

YR1 SEM2:
- BUSS1002
- ECMT1020
- ECON1001
- ECON1002

Basically my questions are:
  • Is there a reason the guide is set out in such a way and should I follow it?
  • Is my order possible and if so, is it recommended/advisable? (in terms of do you think the combination of core subs in SEM1 will become dry?...is it better to do ECON1001 and 1002 in different semesters?...is BUSS1020 too difficult for first sem?)
  • What free junior electives can we choose from? (Can they be from any major subject area in the School of Business?)
  • Do you think its good to get all junior units out of the way in first year?
Thanks if you can help! :)

You look like you're all set. I think when you go to enrolment, they might make you stick to their structure. If so, when uni starts, login to myuni and withdraw from the ones you do not want to do and put in the units of your choice. They can't really stop you.

ECON1001 and ECON1002 can be done together in one semester, I did it when I was doing commerce, both were quite easy to manage.

free junior elective = any 1000 unit in your faculty, you can also do other units from other faculties with their permission.

ok thanks alot! Yeh I don't really mind either way, I just thought it was more neat to get all my junior core/prerequisites out of the way in the first year. Also I didn't know what to expect at enrolment so I just wanted to make sure I came prepared.
+rep for your help
