Must be on closed bounds as in defined over [a,b] i.e [ not ( 2. Function must be continuous for the bounds [a,b] so f(x) = 4/x-8 on bounds [-1,2] can have a maximum by IVT but on [7,9] can not as f(x) is not defined at x = 8.
