HELP! What's WRONG WITH MY COMPUTER???? (1 Viewer)

I have not the slightest idea about computers
So you IT people, help me, the no-brainer.

Here goes: My computer is 37.2GB big.​

When I highlight EVERYTHING in "My Computer", including hidden files, then right click it for "Properties" to see how much I am using, it says:

Size: 3.88GB
Size on disk: 4.35GB​

But in scan disks, defragging etc, it says I am using 10GB.

I've got Norton Security, Anti-Virus&Trojan, I don't think it's a virus cuz my computer is doing fine.

What's with the extra crap in my computer????

How do I get rid of it?​

ur computer, is prob. partitioned. ie. split into many other hard drives, theoretically theres one.

try again.. but this time.. scroll down abit.. and just under the "show hidden files" checkbox.. theres a checkbox that says.. "hide system files" or something like that.. uncheck it.. and see what happens..

Delete temporary internet files.
Empty recycle bin.
Turn off System Restore.
Delete .tmp files.
Remove programs you don't use any more and clean up your registry (if you dare).
Delete logs and backups from hijack this, norton, spybot, and adaware (they all create backups if you ask them to)
Delete msn logs, irc logs, msn received files.

If disk usage hasn't appeared to have changed, then give up

Btw, what OS are you using? And when you say 'highlight everything in My Computer', do you mean highlight all your drives, or highlight your hard drives only, or..?

I unchecked the system files as you told me zco.
You're right.
There's my 6GB.

Thanks for everyone who helped but.... does the system files REALLY have to be 6GB???? Apparently some of these are useless anyway.

Is there any way I can sort the rubbish and the important ones out?

I'd say alot of those are temp files and your system restore backup files. Turn it off like anti suggested.

haehokay.. at least its working.. well that 6GB's consist of hte files that are temporary.. theres a folder called "recylcer", and a recycle bin icon named "recycleD". Also antoher forlder called "System Volume Information"... they consist of the OLD files..

I deleted all of mine.. saves heaps of space..! but i suggest you only delete the OLD folders inside "system volume information" and you should have recovered most of ur diskspace..!

also.. disable hibernation.. and delte teh hibernation file in c: its a system file!

If you want to see how much space you are taking up, right click on the drive and hit properties. It is much quicker and accurate than highlighting files.

i found 15gb of tempfiles laying around in my computer lol i didnt really notice it...
