I desperately need help with projectile motion questions in physics!!! I know all the formulas but dont know WHEN to apply them by just reading the question. Also, i dont get the concept of splitting the motion into vertical and horizontal components. Can anyone give me a general step by step guide to how to answer projectile motion questions please??

Physics is not about remembering formulas, it's about knowing physical concepts then formulas are based on experiments and physical observations.

But in HSC Physics I beg to differ, e.g.
v2 - u2 = 2as is time-independant given the right variables and conditions.
I see this commonly when someone throws something or jumps vertically in the air.
We can find the maximum height in a vertical jump as the final velocity is zero at that very instant on the assumption we know the initial velocity u and acceleration due to gravity a

Hmmm try this next time:

Write out what you have (ie, if you have initial velocity is 5 m/s, wirte out u = 5 m/s, etc etc)

Write out what you are after (say, final velocity, write v = ?)

Look at the formulae, and with all the information you've gotten, try to find out as many things that you can find out as possible. The answer which you need usually is in there.

It's not the best approach, but if you know the procedure, it usually works.
