i have been given an essay for in the wild. i am doing brave new world and blade runner ( obviously!) anyways this is the question:

"How do the constructed societies of each world reinforce the composers' concerns that humanity should maintain an equilibrium with nature or suffer the consequences?"

remember to:
-evaluate context and its influence
-equally discuss both texts providing detailed textual evidence
-analyse the forms, features and structures of both texts
-Demonstrate your understanding of how the purpose, audience and medium of production create or effect meaning.

i am lost as to how to go about doing this essay. Any help would be appreciated:( .

ok, let's see how much i can help you....
in both the texts i'm sure you'd notice they're both dystopic worlds. this is beacuse nature has been manipulated to such an extent that it is either an environmental disaster (BR) or has produced a society completely disconnected from nature and the 'natural state' (BNW).
i recommend you write HEAPS of supporting examples in you essay. for BR you could talk about the darkness of the world, how it's always raining, the fact that there are city skyline avertisements for colonising offworld (the place is such a hell hole, they want to escape), etc... and for BNW you can talk about the characters of the new world not being able to experience love, appreciation for nature and basically anything that disgusts you about the way they live.

also talk about what influenced the composers views. they want you to talk about the context of the texts production, for example, in Huxley's time they had just experienced WWI and the disastrous effects of technology (opp. to natural) would have shaped his view.

if you want to be smart, try talking about the different responses from different audiences. for example from huxley's time or from now. (it should only be a line or two for each text).

i personally like to show off with smart words (as long as they're succinct) to impress the marker. remember to contrast and compare the texts cos your essay has to be synthesised. e.g. you could say that both texts present Romantic notions and marxist views.

a very important point is not to become too involved with the philosophical aspects of the texts. 2U english is obsessed with techniques. so talk about language, camera angles, lighting, etc...

i hope this has helped you...
GOOD LUCK!

ohh.. just one more thing:
it's always good to do a lil extra reading. you might want to research the sci-fi genre, possibly film noir, contexts, utopia/dystopia, etc....
