i just wanted some clarification on a chem question.

It goes;

what volume of oxygen is needed to convert 12L of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide (25deg and 100kPa)
this is what I got for the equation.- O2 + 2.CO = 2.CO2
soo what im wondering is the answer just 6L??:eek:

Remember: At 25oC (298.15 K) and 100 kPa (0.987 atm) 1 mole of an ideal gas has a volume of 24.79 L.

So basically all gases occupy the same volume of space in 1 mole.

Because this question only requires you to work out the volume of one gas compared to another, you don't have to worry about doing any calculations; you just need to look at the ratios:

1 mol O2 : 2 mol CO --- that's how much of the reactants you'll need. In this case they're saying you have 12L of CO. In the balanced equation you have written you can deduce that you will need half the amount of 02 to react with CO. And because you know that 1 mole of any gas at STP will occupy the same space, you can say that double the amount of CO is required to act with O2 in this reaction.

Therefore you are correct: You simply halve the 12L to give you the volume of O2 required here.
