well this is from memory:
- ensured that russia would not attack germany during invasion of poland
- prevented attack from russia so that germany would have to face two front attack
- meant that allied forces would be slower than Germany just in case they decided to not follow appeasement approach
- brings to the fore the notion that Hitler was pragmatic rather than an individual who meticulously followed a blueprint
