I think thats bs, i wouldnt have done IT if its true. Apart from the fact that you wont graduate for atleast 3 years, jobs in the industry, although obviously not as great in number as before, still exist and are steady. Think about it, the numbers of graduates have dropped, in UNSW this has been as large as 50% decrease, in USYD there are still vacancies in your course. So when you graduate there will be less IT graduates than before.

I think some areas are already experiencing serious shortages as companies try to recruit more IT staff. And the industrial bodies have cried out for a marketing campaingn to attract more ppl into IT. So you'll be in good shape for a job by the time you graduate.

So far ive done IT support and also i have taken a look at the field maps for the new program they are about to implement and investigate why they are printing out in reverse (the program is also written in German which complicates things).

Think about it logically: The IT industry has recently stopped going down-hill. Now we live in an ever expanding world, where electronics and computers are ever increasing in demand. First note that depressions don't last forever and secondly note that demand for IT professionals can only continue to increase as we become more technologically advanced.

Actually, experts predict the IT industry will pick up again (actually, it has been out of recession for a while), so quite the opposite to what you fear is true.

Of course if you want a really fast growing industry which is far more likely to remain stable (due to the very nature of science), try nanotechnology or biotechnology.

Of course it also depends on what you major in. Some majors are newer and more in demand at the moment, such as networks, computer science and digital systems, whilst others traditional ones are steady such as software development and information systems
