Not quite being ready to leave the school environment yet and eager to become fluent in German, I've been seriously considering doing a 'year 13' in Europe.

Has anyone done a high school year abroad? If so, I have sooo many questions... where did you go? How was it - the best and worst parts? Which company did you do it through, how much did it cost? (The cost is unfortunately the biggest problem at the moment for me...) Cheers for any input.

One of my friends went to America with Sothern Cross Cultural and said they had the time of their lives...dont know abt price though,

another friend went to Mexico with Rotary - didnt know a word of spanish (thats what they speak isnt it? ) and then when they came back they spoke fluent spanish (or mexican or whatever they speak there)..... They got 'sponsored' so they went free of charge (well abt 600$ for an insurance policy was all they paid)

From what I hear theyre great...

I went on a 10 week program 2 germany (i know its not a year) with AGSES and when I came back I could speak alot better than i could b4 i went...it cost me abt 6000$....Course now that Im not immersed in German every day I have forgotton alot of it :(

Lol, yeah, it's Spanish.

Now that I've been given the go-ahead from my parents, I guess it's just a matter of finding a good program, passing the interview and picking the country.

Germany - because I'm more than halfway there on the rocky road to fluency?
Spain/France - because I could probably learn a whole new language fairly well in a year?

A lot to think about... anyway, thanks for your input Peartie. Can I just ask - what were the best and worst parts of your exchange?

i'm going on a rotary exchange to finland next year. i have no idea what it'll be like or if i'll cope but my theory was if i was going to defer why not do something interesting. rotarys about $6000 for the year, and most of the other programs are about $9000 i think, although i don't know how many will still be accepting people for next year
