hi, i'm contemplating doing an honour degree next semester.
i read the website and it says i have to consult unit convenor before lodging the application form.
does it mean that they are rejecting applicants based on the interview? is this interview important?
what type of questions will i have in the interview?
please give me some advice.
thank you in advance.

I assume it's something in EFS? Anyway, if you're more specific (what degree) then someone here can help you.

That being said, from what I've read and understood from here, it's like most other divisions.

They're not saying that there's any kind of interview (applicants look like they're accepted based on GPA). What they're saying is that if you are thinking about honours, you should discuss it with an academic in your area for reasons of logistics - what it comprises of, if you have to prepare, etc.

They just want students chatting about their options before they dive in, that's all. :)

Honours will kill you. (tm) Or make the people around you want to kill you.

Seriously.

isn't it possible to graduate 'with honours' without doing the extra year?

It completely depends on the degree.

In most degrees, honours is an extra component of study (usually one year full-time). Some degrees may award honours for performance in undergrad, but I don't know any at Macquarie off the top of my head.

The best way to know is for you to look on your department's website.

You'll probably be doing a 4-5 year course with the honours component as a compulsory aspect of it.

Most of EFS has honours like Arts, unless I'm mistaken: Normal degree (eg BCom(Acst)) then a year of honours which consists of coursework and a thesis. If you're doing a double degree, it's probably still the same: You've either got the choice of doing honours immediately after you've completed the requirements of your degree, or at the end of both degrees.

I assume there are areas in EFS which are different, but most of it's like that.

An LLB has the Honours component built into it. So if you get the marks you can automatically get second class, but if you want first class you need to complete an additional thesis (either half- or full-year, its up to you).

I've never heard of an Honours interview? The Honours programs I know of are based purely on marks. Its very black and white: if you don't have the requisite GPA, you won't ever be able to gain entry to honours.

LLB(Hons) at all universities are confusing. :-/

Doesn't help that a lot of the unis don't have online info about them.

I couldn't agree more! I had to email the admin lady, who took 2 weeks to get back to me to get that one sentence of information! The old handbooks (like the 2004 one) mention it right at the beginning, but of course the law dept change the requirements every 3 years or so.

Thanks for the info, though - I honestly never knew what happened at Macquarie. Luckily it's never come up in the four years I've been working for PR. Actually, I don't ever recall of any students asking about honours... :-/
