Does it generally have an accuracy of +/- 0.5?
Just curious.

Actually, I notice that the UAI for 2001 is always considerably higher than 2002 and 2003. Is there any reason for this?

Most UAI's can be around +/- 0.5-1.5. Becomes less accurate towards the bottom. i.e. < 50 UAI.

The UAI is considerably higher because every year it appears you need to score higher HSC marks in the same subject to attain the same UAI as the previous years. Reason for it is most likely everyone is getting smarter and attaining higher marks.

does the scaling take care of the increased intelligence of the candidature? coz otherwise wouldn't the people in the "less intelligent" years have an advantage of sorts? (if they were smart)

Yes - the scaling parameters for each year are calculated afresh based on the ability of the candidature for that year.

or people are working out "prepared answers"/possible scenarios (which is another form of 'intelligence' granted) for the HSC ...... hence the changes to some of the syllabi eg SOR ... this point was also bourne out in that article in the newspaper where they got a group of the "best" to sit the HSC from the 1950's/1960's....
Just some more food for thought... :)
