hey, im doing 4u math....

i heard that only the 3u and 4u you do at school is counted to the hsc

if this is the case, what happens to the other 2 units of math, is it ignored or how do they work out a mark for it.

i go to baulkham hills high school

Extension 1 is two units.
Extension 2 is two units (making a combined total of four units)

Your two unit maths mark is forfeited in the calculation of your UAI.

For those that simply do three units, they keep their two unit mark, and include the additional extension unit.

4U
Extension 1 - 2 Units
Extension 2 - 2 Units

3U
Extension 1 - 1 Unit
Mathematics - 2U

2U
Mathematics - 2U :)

note - this means no 2 unit exam. yay!

trade off is, that u sit the 4 unit exam, which is (to say the least) considerably more challenging.

Most 4U candidates would have had to sit a 2U examination (or would have accelerated) in the years prior to the preliminary course.

For example:

2000 - School Certificate (while in Year 9)
2001 - 2U Maths (while in Year 10)
2002 - 2/3U Maths (while in Year 11, accelerating again in Extension 1 Maths, while attempting to re-sit 2U if the marks aren't up to scratch).
2003 - Sitting for both 3/4U Maths, dropping 2U completely.

But you are right sammeh, no 2U exams for the 4-unit students (although they would've sat for 2U in Year 11, completed the course and accelerated).

No, it's an example ;)

No, I didn't. But then again, you didn't do the other 4 unit either. :p If I'm doing 3/4 Maths and English, you should be doing 3/4 English and Maths ;)

No, only for Maths accelerants. The rest complete their School Certificate (along with Science and English, in 2001) in Year 10.

No, you cannot have "6" units of Maths in the calculation of your UAI.

For 4U students
2U Extension 1
2U Extension 2

Forget about 2U completely.

If you are doing only 10 units, then that would leave a further 6 units, of which English must be included in your UAI. I forget the exact rules, but the UAI requires at least 3 subjects I believe, of which no more than 4 units from any one subject can count.

edit
Found it.

Rule 1 - Eligibility

To be eligible for a UAI you must satisfactorily complete at least 10 units (including at least two units of English) of UAI courses for which there are formal examinations conducted by the Board of Studies.

Courses must include at least three UAI courses of two units or greater and at least four subjects.

at my school we arent required to be assessed externally for 2u maths at all, however we are required to be assessed internally for it. i assume that in the event that a student drops 4u at the last minute, said student sits the exam, but otherwise your final 2u maths mark is taken from an estimate based on your aam in 2u maths.

however, i'm not sure if thats entirely correct; i'll check it out.

huy, you have tried to explain the 4u of maths how many times this week? :p

here is my spin.

for most who does 4u maths, the will be doing the 2u work + assessments in class. this allows them to drop down to 3u if their 4u mark after a couple of assessments is bad.

you wont really drop 4u at the last minute. i mean if you sit the trials, then you should keep it. if you kept 4u, when you know your not up to it, then it is a mistake. having said that, there isnt a problem in going to a few weeks of lessons and finding out what it is like, just out of curiosity. :p

so if you keep 4u, then your 4 units of maths will come from your 4u assessments and 3u assessments. each 3u and 4u been given equal weighting, 2 units.

Phew, Rahul said it for me. (Thanks! :))

I'm going to stop trying to explain 4U Maths, because 4U English is so much more easier to explain in terms of units - they're all counted! :D

What Rahul said is correct (coming from a guy who doesn't do 4U Maths). :p

you do it correctly but, thats the thing, and questions still raised
4u english easier than 4u maths therefore also easier to explain :p j/k
i dont want to start a 4u maths vs 4u eng debate :D

No arguments here :)

G'night (morning) Rahul.
I'd best be off now. :)
