I don't get it. Do they take just your final exam marks or your overall performance for the hsc?

This is a very broad question.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, UAC have a simple explanation on their website:

Whilst the book is for 2003 HSC students, the process is exactly the same for 2004.

We're hoping to have an online FAQ completed by the time results are released...

But that in itself takes a fair bit of effort.
