Sorry for bombarding questions on the chem forum, but I hope this question will also benefit others :)

Like title states, how much do we need to know for a band 6? Outside the syllabus?

I honestly don't know

Depends on what the dotpoint asks
"Outline, define" Would be specific but brief amounts
"assess, discuss, explain" would be more detailed

Enough that you can construct an answer in your own words concisely and coherently, as adrita said above, it also depends on the imperative word in the dotpoint, and you need to know the syllabus dotpoint well enough to apply your knowledge of that dotpoint in a range of scenarios and in 'new questions'-i.e. questions that crosses over different modules/different dotpoints, the best way to assess whether you have fulfilled the requirement is either explain that dotpoint to someone that doesn't study the subject at all and see whether they can understand it or do past HSC questions and mark yourself on it.
