Developing answers to unseen texts for the Common Module is a fairly linear process that typically involves steps such as the following:
  1. Reading the texts and identifying techniques - While reading a text, you should initially focus on gaining an understanding of some of its general elements. These include structure, themes, setting and tone. This will enable you to gain a brief idea of the text, which can in turn assist you in framing your analysis so that you search for techniques in an efficient effective manner, i.e. focus on finding techniques that you believe would be appropriate to consider. When you start searching for techniques, it would be a good idea to emphasise those with a significant effect rather than those that may be vague, which can potentially limit their benefit to, and by extension, the quality of your answers. Depending on what you are comfortable with, you may wish to annotate/highlight parts of the text that may be of interest.
  2. Interpreting questions and determining the techniques that best suit them - This involves identifying the requirements of questions, which can be done by focusing on key words for example. Having previously identified techniques, you can subsequently determine the techniques that would enable you to maximise the quality of your answers. Such techniques typically have stronger effects and can be related to the question in addition to particular themes and the Common Module as a whole. The number of techniques to be used will depend on the mark allocation for a question, where you may wish to discuss more techniques in response to questions that are worth more marks and vice versa.
  3. Developing your answers using a particular structure - Now that you have the elements that form your response, you can start developing it. Evidently, stating them does not solely constitute a good quality answer, meaning that you should aim to provide a sophisticated answer that follows a clear structure. Here, you may wish to consider applying paragraph structures such as TEEL or STEEL, which can allow you to present the elements that form your responses in a coherent manner, ultimately resulting in good-quality answers.
I hope this helps! :D
