Hi all,

The realisation of entering the senior years has hit me, I just need some pointers on how to do well next year with these subjects:

- English Advanced
- SOR II
- Ancient History
- Legal Studies
- Business Studies
- CAFS

I'm looking for how to organise and revise notes, best textbooks (if needed), how to do well in prelims, how to succeed in each subject AND HOW TO NOT BURN OUT

Extra pointers and suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Thanks :D

Hey there,

First of all, congratulations on reaching the end of your junior years.
I don't do all your subjects but I can give you a few pointers for the subjects that are the same as mine.
English Advanced
- Don't put off your English because you simply find it boring
- Get as much help/advice from your teacher as you can
- Read your texts thoroughly and don't be afraid to use spark notes (it has good videos for an overall summary)
- Prepare drafts to hand in to your teacher to gain feedback before the due date
- Before an exam, create a one-page summary of essay and practice writing it under exam conditions (Remember the Steel formula)

Community & Family Studies
- Participate in class discussion
- once a week make a summary of what you've learnt
- refer to the syllabus to make your notes
- Practice extended response questions and learn your verbs
-Always ask for clarification with class work/assessments if you do not understand
- Nelson and Pearson textbooks are great!

I hope this helps! I wish you all the best for year 11. If you have any other concerns don't be afraid to ask. Remember relax these holidays - you're going to have lots of work ahead of you.

Well, congratulations on completing your junior years. Remember that the senior years will require an exponential amount of workload compared to the junior years, so make sure you remain focused and you shall succeed in your goal.

On how to improve and maximise your potential in English Advanced: check out my responses in the threads below:

http://community.boredofstudies.org/showthread.php?t=315658&p=6476770#post6476770 (How much you should study in the holidays-applicable to preliminary and HSC years)

In this summer holiday, you should focus on making sure you have a prepared psychological mindset for senior year studies, i.e. it is all very well to have a very positive attitude of work hard and put the hard work in, but what I mean by psychological mindset is you must have a much tougher mindset to prepare you not just for the much greater academic rigours of the senior years, but also a corresponding increase of expectations-i.e. taking more responsibility for your self-learning, more proactive role in asking questions when you don't understand instead of blaming the teacher for not teaching the syllabus content thoroughly enough, significant increase in work load, and basically you need to make sure you have consistent performance in all your subjects-consistency is very important-both in your academic performance(I am talking about at optimal levels) as well as consistency in your study routine, learning methods and sleeping patterns-don't study 24/7 because you will wreck your body and by then your atar will become meaningless if you destroy your health-take care of yourself, do relax a bit in the holidays-you need enough relaxation to get you to keep working very hard for the next two years-and I think if you prepare your psychological mindset over the holidays, it will help you even more than pure attaining academic knowledge for year 11.

Essentially, make sure to keep healthy-a healthy body allows you to have good results. Construct goals and be prepared to stick to it (long term and short term ones). If you have any questions about studying in senior years-you are welcome to pm me-best wishes for achieving brilliant results in the next two years:)

You don't need to be a genius to do well in prelim legal studies lol just read revise regularly and be up to date with your notes and you'll be fine really. Its just common sense like whats the difference between public and private law and all that shit, practice writing essays and getting your teacher to mark them, and preferably use cambridge for your textbook lol

Whereas ancient is pretty boring. I hated ancient history and felt like crying in a corner everytime i saw it on my timetable. I eventually failed prelim ancient history with a D and a rank of 29/42 lol. Just dont be like me. Pay attention in class (i watched movies on my laptop), write notes (i made no notes and i didnt even have an ancient book. I legit threw all my work in the bin after each lesson), revise regularly, write your notes under the syllabus dot points, and practice writing essays and make sure youre being critical in them. Use antiquity (i think thats what its called i cant remeber) as your textbook

Good luck
