i'm looking at the 2005 paper for ancient history, and i see that there is this section iv.....additional historical period or ancient society.

maybe this is a dumb question, but do we do this section? or is it voluntary? how does this work?

or is this phased out this year as now we have the pompeii & herculanem section?

yep, as of this year there is no additional period/society section. you can get a specimen paper for the 2006 HSC here
