I have a few questions about HSC examinations

1)Are we allowed to use dictionary or those electronic dictionaries in the physics/geo/maths exam?

I haven't read any rules on dictionaries.

I know your allowed to use dictionary in the maths and science competitions.

2) Do they check if your calculator is reset and how do they know if it's a board of studies approved calculator?

1. I don't know for sure, but i don't think you can. You won't need one anyway.

2. The teacher/supervisor has a list of approved calculators; they check it before the exam.

1. Electronic dictionaries- No. You could save anything on it! Dictionaries - nope. If you assume they will allow you to bring in dictionaries because they don't mention it then you might be wasting your time returning to your bag.

2. Graphics calculators look different from the scientific calculators.

When you receive your HSC timetable later in the year it lists what is required for each exam. Only those things are allowed. For most subject that is a pen, pencil, geometry set and calculator. Languages allow dictionaries.

The people at my school don't. They're a bit lax, yet nobody cheats. It's strange.

Slack asses

BOS enforces all these guidelines but once exams end heaps of people start chatting (and discussing answers).

There is a time at the end of exams when the supervisors allow everyone to fill in their Student Number and Centre Number on every page they've used during the exam. Many people take that time to finish off essays, short answers, MCQs, etc.

As for the calculator issue, supervisors can't possibly memorise the procedure of checking the memory of every single calculator model, so they don't. Besides it would take too long.

I heard a rumour at our school where Yr12 Physics class students decided to piss off the supervisors.

So 60 of them bought blank pieces of paper inside and when the supervisors asked if any of them had paper to hand. They all put their hands up.
