Q:With the aid of a diagram discuss how an experiment using an induction coil, a discharge tube with a fluorescent screen inside and a bar magnet could indicate that an electron is negatively charged.

Could you guys help me with this question please :)

As the electrons travel through a magnetic field they experience a force due to the equation F = qvBsinθ. Using the right-hand rule you can determine that a positively charged particle (e.g. a proton) would experience a force down. However, as seen on the fluorescent screen, they instead go up. Therefore the charge of the electron must be negative to experience a force in the upwards direction.
