HSC subjects help. (2 Viewers)

Hi,

I am fairly certain what subjects I want to take

-Studies of Religion 1 (Catholic School)
-Mathematics
-Biology
-Chemistry
-Primary Industries
-Agriculture
-English Advanced
-English Extension 1

This would put me at 14 units (if I'm correct).

I'm just worried about the workload.

I get easily distracted (I'm supposed to be studying now actually) but I plan to go the library after school most days next year for an hour or two... or three.

Chemistry and Maths are assumed knowledge for the courses I'm considering at UNI (Animals Sciences, Agricultural Sciences and Biodiversity and Conservation), biology is recommended and at the moment I am currently first in my agriculture class and my teacher wants me to do it next year, and so do I because I love it and PI.

I'm basically just wondering.... have a set myself too much? How hard will it be and what subject would take the most studying? What marks would I have to be getting to get an ATAR over 90 (Required for certain courses.... plus my dad said he would buy me a car.)

I don't really have to do Extension 1 English but according to my research their isn't much difference between it and Advanced.

I think the 14 units you have picked would be a manageable workload for most of the year. But I think it would get very stressful during exams and assessment periods, you will be sitting 8 exams when most people will sit 6.

14 units is a lot. I would drop to 12 because it's not worth the extra stress.

With regards to EE1 and EA, they're completely different courses. Extension is more rigourous (thinking wise) and critical than EA.

A friend of mine did Primary Industries and he didn't like it. he said it is not worth the time and effort so he dropped it at the end of year 11

Do you actually want to do SoR? becuase if you have the option just do catholic studies instead which is non atar.

this option is available but many catholic schools (including the one i went to) were very strict and made us do SOR1 or SORII. they only moved us down if we were going to drag the whole cohort down.

Sor1 is pretty easy. I seriously only studied one day before my half yearly, trials and hsc. I managed to get 45 (90), i regret not actually applying myself in that subject.

yes SORI/II are generally easy subjects. you have 2/3 religions to study respectively and a further 2/3 topics relating to religion to study respectively again. but the problem most students have (even me) was "why do i want to learn this?" I personally have no religious affiliation and couldn't motivate myself to work at the subject (hence my 11% in the final exam - those were pitty marks too). However; it is a good "good scaling" subject in terms of it's work load

this is mainly the reason why most state rankers in SOR attain full marks in the exam. a few years ago a few people state ranked in sorI/II and when we say their responses; they were, not sure how to explain, but fairly basic (in terms of English and sophistication) but all the content if not more was there.

I have also heard the excuse that SORI is my "back up" unit just in case if i do bad in one of my other subjects yet the student still puts zero effort it for this said "back up unit"

Don't do more than you have to. Because why? Less stress - and more time to study on your subjects if you drop down to the minimum. Just do Your 6 subjects and english extention if you really want to... but if you don't love english then don't do it. There's no point - you don't get extra marks for doing more than the minimum, just less study time for the rest of your subjects and more stress.

Thanks for all the advice. I know they offer Catholic Studies at the school but they usually only let you take it if you are doing pretty bad in religion the previous years. Also, PI the examination isn't compulsory, so I figure if I am stressing about it at the time I can choose not to do it (I know it isn't as simple as just not showing up.)

I agree with the above, it's gonna be a very big adjustment heading into Y11 and it'll be even more difficult with unnecessary units.

there is a slight difference with extension - it requires you to think more about 'deeper' concepts. also, i think that 14 units is too much, if you really want, take 14 for the first few weeks and drop the one you like the least
