Hey guys I'm new here, and yeah i currently just returned from holidays and boom prelims are here, I missed out on two topics, water and energy..

and it would really help if you could answer a few of my questions >_<

1. What is the ionic equation for dissolving ammonium nitrate(NH4NO3) in water?

2. How do i use deltaH = m C deltaT? (calorimetry)

that is all so far.. im trying to cram as my exam is in a day or two..

thanks in advance.

1)

NH4NO3 <--> NH4+ + NO3-

Valencies add up to 0 for NH4NO3, so 1 + (-1) = 0

2)

∆H = - mC∆T

∆H is the heat of combustion of the fuel, the final unit is (kJ/mol)

m is the mass of the substance being heated (e.g water) NOT the fuel.
C is a constant, it's usually the specific heat capacity of water such as the value 4.18 (Look on the HSC Chemistry exam data sheet)
∆T is the change in temperature of the substance (Final temperature - Initial Temperature) NOT the fuel.
