The short-term money market

The short-term money market describes a market where participants including banks and other major financial institutions trade very large volumes of short-term debt instruments including bank bills, promissory notes, bank issued certificates of deposit and other short-term interest bearing securities. The turnover on the Australian short-term money market (including the cash market) is in the order of A$25 billion every day. Money market interest rates on instruments traded in the short-term money market have traditionally only been available to institutions who participate directly in the market.
