Ok, so here's the story...
I met a new student in O-Week through the program I was involved in, and he was an International from Malaysia here to study Commerce. Anyway, he was having major problems trying to organise his enrolment, as he applied for 2 semesters worth of credit and was later granted it in writing.
So I organised a meeting with the Program Officer for Commerce (wont name), and asked to call me later with a follow up on what subjects he enrols in.
He contacts me again just to tell me that, hey, you know, the uni has renegged on its credit exemptions for him, and he now has to do the full 3 years. Now, he accepted the offer to study at Newcastle heavily on the fact that he got 2 semesters credit for previous study. Then, you uni tell him "oops, our bad. We weren't meant to grant you that", and expect this to all be sweet.
Well yeah, obviously he was pissed. I told him to arrange a meeting with a solicitor, and go from there. Anyway, he meets with the dean of students (wont name) in the mean time, who tried to water-down the situation. Anyway, the kid told him he was pursuing his options in regards to legal action, and well then, did the dean go 180 degrees. The dean offered to pay certain costs, but the whole saga has left the guy with a pretty sour taste. He didnt tell me how much it had cost his parents to get him here, but im suspecting it was around 30,000 (AUD$10,000) in financial and opportunity costs.
Anyway, the situation was that if the kid went ahead with legal action, it was pretty much an open and shut case (without being a lawyer myself), through breach of contract, and damages could have been sought.
The kid has now withdrawn from the uni, and has applied for Curtin Uni (WA), and finds out if he is accepted mid next month. If that falls through, he'll return to malaysia and study there.
Well, I guess that is what happens when you have a university trying to be run as a business by a bunch of academics. No experience and no fucking clue.
End Rant.
