I know this is extremely unrealistic but I'm. Desperate to and I'd like any advice I can get, in case anyone is in a similar situation or knows someone who is.

Do you think the pay you'd get from a part time job in university could cover the cost of shared rent?
Tbh I’m not sure it probably depends on how much u earn and how much the rent is (which I’m not too sure how much it is)

I think it’s manageable just be able to balance study with work

You might want to discuss this with family and such, maybe they can help you. Universities usually offer student accommodation that is subsidised, try looking around government websites for subsidies and payments you may be eligible for. If you get $25/h, work say 20 hours a week, that's $500 a week.

This place is $430 for rent per week https://flatmates.com.au/share-house-sydney-camperdown-2050-P1114933 seems expensive, but the website probably offers cheaper options.

youth allowance, uni scholarships, living either on campus or far far away from the main city could help with costs. rent gets cheaper when u live with roommates and its further away from the city.

working at a job with higher pay rates such as bunnings might help. if u have any skills such as tafe related ones u could specialise in them.

u might be cooked savings wise as other kids living at home have a better chance at saving while working. also youth allowance is odd as ur parents might have to specify that you arent living with them in order to get it. plus it isnt that much money.

i wanted to move out as well but stopped at how awful the situation of survival is at the moment 😭

What year do you graduate

Also, I'd like to be able to live... Well, not any further west than St Mary's perhaps, because I'll reach a point where transport to uni will also become an unrealistic fee.

i told myself that i am not going to do uni in sydney. i just dislike how rush everything is (just my personal opinion). i feel like everything here is just 'go go go'. i am trying for queensland uni for veterinary. if i dont get in im going to study to become a zookeeper and then go work at australia zoo in queensland and fall in love with robert irwin and he will marry me and we will be togehter forever happy wife happy life. if thats not that case (which i highly doubt it), i plan on not living.

Where do you want to move? For uni your best option will likely to be working part time/full time depends on your circumstances and living with Youth Allowance. If you want to rent outside, it will be highly unfeasible because it's unlikely you'll have a good paying job straight out of high school. You can choose rentally assisted accommodations at your uni, which will be cheaper than the ones on the market, since they will be 30% cheaper than their expected price for the same quality on the rental market, but this comes with being eligible for it.

For other uni accommodations, most spread between $200 to $700 per week. If you want to budget it then you can choose the lower end, and Youth Allowance alone should be fine. But if you want to live with quality, then it's feasible to have a part time job to support yourself because uni rental arrears will appear on your credit and stay for roughly 7 years. If this gets too low, then it can impact your eligibility to find future rentals or banking loans.

That being said, most unis have financial supports, so atleast you don't have to worry about starving to death. Be sure to do the most research as you can before going to any. Use anything that you can, like Deep Research, Gemini, asking on the relevant subreddit/forum, checking on the uni website, etc.

Also check if you're eligible for any scholarships, since most unis have scholarships that are designed to help students in financial difficulties. This isn't guaranteed, but it is worth researching.

This is very helpful, thank you. I assumed living off-campus would be cheaper than on-campus accommodation - Honestly I do not mind the quality as long as it's somewhere I can reasonably manage everything I need. I'm assuming the lower end ones have many shared facilities? Do you know about the safety of these places?

Most accommodations are atleast safe...Because you can't enter them without a student id card. Only the people at the reception has the power to open up to strangers but they are not allowed to do so. Any strangers will be naturally blocked outside of the accommodation because of the former and will be forced to visit the reception at working hours if they have any affairs. That's unless they picked up someone's id card or someone left the gate/door open.

Sometimes people steal, probably because of financial issues. Rarely those big ones, like your laptop or something else...but like your clothes, your delivery food, etc.
