hey,

just need a little direction for this essay question:

asses the reasons for the failure of the intervention by the USA to achieve its aims in indochina up to 1975?

when do i start? eg year?

the underlying aim i can see is that they wanted to stop the communist insurgency from the north. does the geneva conference play any role here?

and with intervention, does that mean the deployment of ground troops etc?

any help would be appreciated

intervention would cover all aspects of US involvement in the vietnam situation. Although, the deployment of ground troops is by the most significant development of that intervention.

i would cover: establishment of support nationawide for N. Vietnam (covering Geneva and Diem), Ho's N. Vietnam (emphasis on its efficiency and stability), destabilisation of Sth Vietnam (propaganda, terror, enclaves), Tonkin Gulf Resolution (mere mentoin i suppose), military strategies (MACV vs VC/NVA), cultural difficulties, Hearts and minds, Tet offensive, media war, unfair peace negotiations, stretching of resources (Cambodia and Laos), homefront political issues (My Lai, protests), concesson of president Ford to Congress over the budget

thats sort of a list of thing but each has to include your judegment as to HOW and WHY it contribyted to the failure of the US i suppose.
