Definitions of Bioethics
· Bioethics pays attention to the growing array of moral issues associated with contemporary medical care and biological and medical research.
·
JEWISH APPROACHES TO BIOETHICS
· Life is of infinite value
· Commandments set to saving life.
· Life is sacred, being created in the image of God; humans are holy and must be treated with respect in life and death.
· ONLY GOD GIVES AND TAKES LIFE.
· Nature was created for the benefit and advantage of human beings, so experimentation is allowed as long as the animal or person does not suffer.
ABORTION
· An unborn person in the Jewish law is not considered a Jewish person until it has been born.
· The foetus is regarded as part of the mothers body and not a separate being until born
· 40 days after conceptions the embryo is regarded as fluid.
· Abortion is allowed under certain circumstances (according to Moses Maimonides)
· Women’s life takes precedence over the unborn Childs life. If the mother is having difficulty and the child is killing her, the unborn child will be aborted.
· Another reason for abortion is if the child is deformed (disabled)
IN VIRTO FERTILISATION
· Masturbation is prohibited within Jewish religions and it is also frowned upon that the sperm is kept after intercourse.
· Is accepted for it is a part of the Talmud is to be “fruitful and multiply” (Genesis 1: 28)
· Objections have occurred as to having fertilisation through a donor, as it may cause genetic ancestry.
EUTHENASIA
· “Who so sheddeth a man’s blood, by a man his blood be shed” (Gen 9:6)
· Murder is prohibited in Judaism.
· It is Gods prerogative for a man to die or not.
· Against ACTIVE EUTHENASIA for we cannot kill when we know the consequences of our actions.
· PASSIVE EUTHENASIA is permitted as we are allowing natural law take place.

The Orthodox Jews follow the bibles strictly so death is not allowed at all, and prolonging life should be done as so, although with the development of the Talmud (oral torah) it can deal with modern issues while continually interpreting the Mishnah.

CHRISTIAN TEACHONS ON BIOETHICS
· “Every human being, even the infant in the mother’s womb, has the right to life immediately from God, not from the parents or from any human society or authority. Therefore there is (no one) that can show or give valid judgements title for the direct, deliberate disposition concerning an innocent life. Example: saving a mother’s life is a most noble end, but the direct killing of the child as a means to this end is not licit. ” PIUS XII
· Commandment “You shall not kill.”
ABORTION
· Abortion within most of Australia is prohibited by the Crimes Act (NSW).
· Lutheran and Anglican views on abortion are similar to Christianity. ‘
· Specific Anglican teaching rest on natural law, because Anglicans do not accept papal teachings, they do not have any fixed ideas or any historical or moral legalism on abortion and means that abortion has occasioned less opposition
· It is irrational to compare the life of the child to the life of the mothers, they are both the same. (according to HUMANE VITAE)
· Example: if a pregnant women needs medication and abortion is a side effect, that is okay but if the women does an action on purpose to abort the baby it is not okay.
· This is stated in the document DECLARATION ON PROCURED ABORTION (1974)[sacred congregation for the defence of the faith]; in Donum Vitae (1987)[SCDF], and consistently in John Paul II’s statements ad teachings.
IN VITRO INFERTILISATION
· Evangelical Christians recall Rachel’s words to Jacob: “Give me children, or I shall die.”
· An essential part of Christian marriage are children
· Artificial contraception is prohibited (Humane Vitae 23) and only periodic abstinence is allowed to regulate births.
· IVF threatens the unitive purpose of marriage, IVF is generally opposed.
· If a couple is infertile, adoption is recommended.
· WASTAGE OF EMBROYS, POTENTIAL LIFE.
· PROTESTANT and some Catholics see injustice in IVF, for the time energy and technology could be used for other medical research.
EUTHENASIA
· Definition: (GREEK MEANING: well, pleasant, death.) the painless inducement of death for the release of suffering and pain.
· “THOUGH SHALL NOT MURDER.” (exodus 20: 13) this is the 5th commandment.
· Classified into three categories:
- EUGENIC = merciful release of the handicapped, deformed or social and racial undesirables, as practiced by the Nazis)
- ACTIVE = where a drug is used to hasten inevitable death
- PASSIVE = treatment is withheld, resulting in death
Ø These two treatments can be voluntary or involuntary.
· Euthanasia in ANGLICAN base their decisions on; A.) Suffering is purposeless and degrading. B.) Human personality is the essence of life, not mere biological functioning. C.) New Testament teachings ‘Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.’
· ORTHODOX obtains a strong law of prohibiting abortion and euthanasia, as life of th upmost importance.
· Euthanasia is prohibited.
