The School of Maths is interested in entering 2 teams (8 students) in the international Mathematical Contest in Modelling (MCM). The competition consists of a 4-day project (held over feb 2-6) where students must write up a report presenting a solution to a general, real life problem which can be taken from any context, eg physical systems, economics, etc. We are looking for students from all technical backgrounds (eg. actuarial studies, computer science, mathematics, physics, engineering, etc) to take part.
One of the great benefits is the opportunity to be personally supervised by Associate Professor Jim Franklin, who will train each team and guide them throughout the 4-days, as well as the chance to apply your studies to something practical. Also the MCM is quite a prestigious competition to enter (looks great on ur CV!) as it draws participants from the top universities in the US and China. In the past, UNSW has performed very well, ranking in the top 20%, and I hope this yr's team can continue our past successes.
So if you have a few days free over February and are interested in taking up the challenge, please contact Jim Franklin. His email is j.franklin@unsw.edu.au.
Further info on the MCM can be found at http://www.comap.com/undergraduate/contests/
