generally an arts-type degree with a major in international relations or your particular university's equivalent. a language and/or a specialisation in a particular region or issue are also good to set you apart from the millions of people who do it.

international relations is the formal study of how states (and non-state actors like NGOs, militant groups, etc) interact, and how they organise their interactions. generally international relations departments will also contain area studies units, bits and pieces of political economy, development studies and that sort of thing, but strictly speaking they're not part of the academic discipline of IR.

international studies is generally the name of a broad degree which at most unis combines political science/international relations with some or all of languages, area studies, modern history, political economy and so on.

i'm thinking of a combined degree: econ/Arts(international relations). Is that what you mean by specialisation in a particular region or issue?

I would lke to learn a language though, just for fun. perhaps outside of uni where I won't get marked on it.
