man i'm gonna write a graduate thesis on kickassness of australian universities... and it's purely going to be based on how far the university is from the CBD, chinatown and central station.

having said that, i'm pretty confident UTS will come out tops. ;)

ROFLMAO. Need I say more? WHat about Sydney Uni?

Anyhows, it's pretty ironic how the results came out given the paper was published by Melb Uni.

wouldn't this make Melbournians head explode from his body
lol i don't think so...remember he goes to the university of Sydney, and has only seen UMelb. It would be like me having an orgasm over USyd getting a good rank.

There are great things about USYD, but i'll be fucked if it's the perfect uni that melbournian thinks it is.

"best in NSW"?

Are you talking about in your field or just overall?

Actually don't answer that, I don't feel like closing another thread.

i read today in the australian a quote from brendon nelson saying that teaching only made up 14% of the ranking. it is more focussed (read biased) towards research institutions.

Hmm, I'm afraid you're wrong there. In some cases a ranking is amazingly important.

However, they may not be important to individuals (such as yourself) and that's fine too. What's important in education is that you find an institution that satisfies your needs and expectations.

Because in this society, people value themselves against others. In order to be happy in life, one doesn't necessarily have to achieved too much, as long as they've achieved more than somebody else.

Well, that's the shallow way to look at it.

On an institutional level, people value something more (and pay it more attention) if it comes from a place considered amongst "the best".

Personally I am opposed to those who live merely to be better than others, but nevertheless rankings are a useful tool for comparison and the making of decisions.

Again, it depends on which aspect you're discussing.

In that light I had research in mind - people take Oxford based research more seriously than say Deakin. :)
