I have just got a toshiba tecra A2 (running XP pro) have multiple computers already networked but sharing one computer with net is startin to get shit so I tried to set up the main desktop (XP home) as a server.

Tried both manually setting up computers and using the wizard. Server allocates IPs fine but internet just doesnt connect and computers cant share files. Some help sites have mentioned that their should be a Internet Connection gateway in network connections this hasn't appeared.

Connection is dial-up, yes its slow but i cant get broadband, and ICS is not just useful for sharing it means i can have interne in my room without having to fuck around with phone lines and have one lying in the hall untidly.

I have read most off the online guides and followed all steps but it just doesnt seem to work. I am experienced and competant setting up ordinary networks but this has me stumped.

Free software solutions would be best as i dont want to spend money if im movin out in 3 months.

would be nice if you would provide more details about your setup?
like what hardware you are using and how many computers are connected... etc

are you using a switch/router? or are you directly connecting with cables?
are you using the right cables, crossover or straight?

from experience i never use the wizard to setup networks, waste of time and it never works properly

server side i expect you have a single network card:
should setup with follow:
IP: 192.168.0.X
Submask: 255.255.255.0
everything else should be default

client side:
IP: 192.168.0.Y
Submark: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.X

notice gatway IP should be same as server IP

and best to keep standard formats
ie. gateway should have ".1" on the end

the wizard always works for me ^^

if u cant access files it means ur computers arent networked properly.
running the wizard on every computer might help to reset any bad configuration. (dont forget that you're choosing the option to connect directly to the net on one computer only.)
another thing that may cause trouble with file sharing is firewall (not WinXP internet firewall... firewalls like ZoneAlarm-type thing.. probably ZA isn't one of them). try turning it off for testing.

pay particular attention to redslert's points.

8 port switch
All patch cables
Server = XP home, dial up connection, 1 NIC
Client 1 = XP pro, 1 NIC
Client 2 = XP home, 1 NIC
Client 3 = 98SE, 1 NIC

Have checked all settings many times all are correct, running ipconfig through command prompt idicates that IP addresses are being given.

Wizzard just screws thinsg up.

It could be Zonealarm but it shouldnt be as its set to let the full 192.168.0.x range through. I will re-check it in the morning.

Can anyone confirm or deny if the Gateway is going to appear in Netwok connections?

Thanks for help, I'll keep trying when not held back by sleep, laziness or study.

on Win9x, no it wont show up.
on winxp, it usually does but sometimes it doesnt
but when it doesnt show up doesnt necessarily mean that the internet isnt being shared
upon restarting it often shows up again

btw if some1 know how to resolve this not-showing-up problem it'd be great

ok the following might sound stupid and irrelevant for you
but re-check that on the host computer, in the Properties for the dialup connection, in the Advanced tab, you have it shared.
also for file sharing make sure in the Local Area Connection Properties on all computers you have Client for MS Network and the File & Printer Sharing enabled.
As I said this can be completely irrelevant to you
just stating the very obvious :D

oh btw you can try http://qwest-tck-ip40.scinternet.net/downloads/WinsockXPFix.exe
it may not solve ur problem but it wont cause any harm (it also creates backup so its ok)

windows networking is so dodge!
I know. I notice XPSP2 has a special "Wireless" networking tool which I am tempted to launch, but I don't want to for fear of screwing up my current wirless network ...

Haha, networking, in theory, should be as simple as the wizard, but it rarely is :(

Taken me months of screwing around with the settings to get ICS working over Xp -> 2K, finally got it working today. Uninstalled the network, and my firewall (after disconnecting from the net mind you), reinstalled it all, started again, and it works beaut.

That can't be used yet, only new routers support that feature

yes, useing DHCP with the wizard is rather unreliable. just manually setup

server
ip: 192.168.0.1
subnet mask :255.255.255.0

clients
ip 192.168.0.X (where x is not 1 and is unique)
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
gateway : 192.168.0.1
DNS : 192.168.0.1

reboot everything and it should work assuming everything is plugged in properly

EDIT: once setup in network connections you should see the dial up connection icon of the server computer
