* If there are alot of smart people in your grade that means your ranking will be pulled down.

Yes, just because you have a low rank, doesn't mean it will make you do bad.

Take this example:
At my old comprehensive high school, in Maths Extension 1, I was coming second and the highest exam mark they got was 41. After moving to the selective high school for a year, I was 22nd or so, I scored 46 exam mark. This could be due to the teaching or my environment but I thought the teachers were on par and do I believe the environment (lots of better students) allowed me to improve dramatically.

Bottom line: They might not help moderation-wise but they help you improve and keep motivated overall.

If you are coming first in a subject then it doesn't matter which school you attend as moderation will have no effect on your marks, but for anything other than first then this can have minor effect due to moderation which is determined by the cohort average and highest mark. Other than that, as someth1ng has mentioned it is great to be surrounded by like minded people who can help you out, motivate and force you to work to your best. For e.g. the main reason schools like James Ruse do good is not because of their teachers but due to the insanely competitive nature of the students.
