Im confused ... back then it was your mark that counted .. but now I noticed its your ranking that matters now ... let me get this clear:

For example - There are only two kids in a Maths Extension 2 class.

1st kid gets 64%
2nd kid gets 55%

Does that mean the 1st kid will recieve good recogniton despite low marks as well as his other classmate ?

Ranks are much more important than marks
If you're first that's the best position you can be, if you come first internally (assessment marks) you get receive the highest external mark (HSC Exam) as your Moderated assessment mark and you keep your own external exam mark. And both the moderated assessment and your own external exam are average to get your HSC mark

The Board Of Studies will take into account the school may set hard exams hence the lower marks

rank rank rank

marks are a way of working out how far ranks are apart from eachother

HSC exams define your marks in a 50/50 ratio: half from your individual performance, half from how you performed according to your rank.

so does that mean when your final individual assessment mark from your school is sent to board of studies, the school also sends your rank for each course?

Yes. You will be able to view your ranks and marks online once they are sent.

Although ranks are more important than marks, the marks itself are an indicator of your level of performance. Of course a high mark means you are performing well, and a low mark means you might have to study more. So try not to think that if you are ranked well you are guaranteed to do well. Other factors such as difficulty of tests and level of acedemic intelligence of the rest of your class is important to note.

What happens when a school has say 250 kids doing adv. english and you are ranked in the middle with an average of 74%. Its a top 60 skool. Would you get an over 80 mark or band 5??? Asking this for my girlfriend

Too many factors to give you a proper answer but I'd guess that your girlfriend might sneak herself a low band 5. No guarantees, but if she improves her rank then she's got a much better chance of getting there.

Depends on how well her cohort does, if their good then she's got a good chance and vice versa
