hey all
im in the beging stage of doing my PIP and so far i have
"why are adolescents materialistic?"
i thought this was a good idea but now i dont think it touches on enough concepts and im not really sure on how to get started and if i dont get started now i neva willl

any advice recommended

Seems like a bit of a generalisation. Maybe you should make your focus question "What is the impact of consumerism on today's adolescents?" or something like that. That way you can encompass the fundamental concepts a lot better.

Persons - the socialisation process and the impact of Westernisation and thus consumerism on it

Society - the prominence of Western ideals in societies such as Australia, leading to an increase in materialism

Culture - the consumer culture, and how in turn this is impacting on other cultures in society (like religion)

Environment - Australia is a Western nation, so consumerism/materialism is widespread.

Time - has this changed over time? how and why?

Then you've got other concepts such as technology, enculturation, acculturation, globalisation, identity etc

You could do a cross-cultural comparison with time, or another country. An Islamic nation would be good as you could discuss the impact of globalisation and hence consumerism and why they are so opposed to it. You could discuss their beliefs towards it and the conflict between Western and Eastern ideals.

Your initial question of "why are adolescents materialistic?" is a good starting point. However, as you mature and learn as S&C progresses, your use of concepts will also become sophisticated. So you need to expand on this idea.

You need to ask yourself these questions (using S&C concepts):

What is my hypothesis?

It is not sufficient to say "My hypothesis is that adolescent are materialistic". You need to define the concept of time, what generation are you talking about? Adolescents in 1950s? You MUST have a clear hypothesis in mind. For example, you need to have a statement alone the lines of "Adolescents in the 21st century are materialist due to social, cultural, and environmental influences due to *insert your theory"

Then, only then, you define your aim, by stating in your PIP, "My aim is to find evidence to suggest that adolesents are materialistic because of infleunces from.... My primary methodologies that I am going to utilise are....."

Don't hesitiate to ask for more clarification.
