My names Derek
Im from queens right there on merik
Raised on honesty, loyalty, good merits
Got a lil sister and my pops just parished
And I just came home so my freedom I really cherish
Young when they bagged me
7 in the can and its torture and just did that for manslaughter
odds was against me, murder in the second degree
made it less cuz I gave em a plea
it’s the past, now a dude home tryna clean up his past
but all niggas no me for is the past
and my minds always thinking how to pocket some cash
they know if something never sparked it’ll cock it and blast
now im tryna live straight and get my act together
but my mom struggling, she putting scraps together
long time ago when I wasn’t home she was cleaning my room
cryed when she found a gat in the dresser
said no child of hers would have had that never
but all the dirt I was going thru I felt like I had to protect her
I had to protect us
Instead of me selling crack forever she rather me in Shoprite getting bags together
Past endeavors wont allow me to get work, forced me to get work
On apps they ask if you ever been to jail
Like if I say yes you’ll hire me, nigga don’t lie to me
I got a lil sister that’s nine, plus moms is chillin with some new dude I think shes feelin
But he don’t help with the bills so Im back on the strip, so we don’t go broke
Im back with this hammer I have to tote, stash you know, Im killin em
Only nigga on the ave with coke
Only man in the house I gotta bring in cash
And im two checks a month mom hit don’t last
Lil sally’s real young but shes developin fast
Oh you thinking the same thing, it’s a hell of a task
Then they clip me, plain clothes cops came to get me
But knew that I had mine on, threatened to hit me
And I move swiftly, said they had a warrant
They knew about it all, said they had an informant
Im back in the cage the cell, with the apes in jail
now Im back in this 8x12
See I tried to live right, but society and made for niggas to live right
So mommy just right, mommy make sure Sally keep her sh*t tight
Ill be home real soon, don’t cry its alright

I know it might seem like its all good, but this is what its like in the hood
Can I rep my set like you should, but this is what its like in the hood
I know it might seem like its all good, but this is what its like in the hood
Can I rep my set like you should, but this is what its like in the hood

my names Sally
an I'm from queens i'm not happy
dad passed away
mom remarried
got a big bro, but he's in jail
mom said 4 some things that he use 2 sell
an i'm always wit stepdad, his names bo
but theres some things about him that my mom don't know
an he says if i tell that it won't be pretty
and i'm really scared of him, he's already hit me
he touches me places i don't like it
i mean more than just a hug or goodbye kiss
i mean touch me places thats private
an he don't just touch, he puts somethin inside it
he says the more he does that
i'll start 2 like it
hand over my mouth so i'm quiet
moms only wit'em cause our $ is low
i'm 16 but i'm shaped like a twenty year old
and my moms in love so she makes excuses
when she looks at me and sees scrapes and bruises
y stepdaddy gotta take me thru this
HELP SOMEBODY I'M GETTIN RAPED I CAN'T DO THIS
nobody understands i'm weary
get goosebumps everytime a man come near me
know how it feel 2 have a man use u as a cushion
all the while moanin an pushin
u try 2 push'em, he's gettin bothered
u yell an u scream but he starts goin harder
trust me its somethin u don't wanna be part of
cuz even when it's over, 4 life it'll scar ya
visit my bro, he can tell i'm sad
starin hard at my stomach he can tell i'm fat
he can tell i'm mad
but stepdaddy touched me fu*ked me
u think i can tell him that
bo called the cops on him should i tell him that
yup, thought u'd agree so i keep it all 2 me
baby on the way, an i'm not workin
an i know it's his cuz i use 2 b a virgin
brother says don't cry wipe my tears
he don't know, this has been my life 4 years
an it falls on deaf ears
dam mommy please come home
PLEASE MOMMY DONT LEAVE US ALONE
some secrets r hard 2 keep
some secrets make it hard 2 sleep
an sleep is the only time i feel safe
but still the act haunts me
an i know that i'ma wake up 2 stepdaddy on me

my names bo, got a chick named pam that i live with
shes always in church, real religous
i had a son who was young he was gifted
until a nigga killed him a week before christmas
3 shots close range with a handgun
i knew before i met pam that it was pam's son
i knew when i bought the mill out harder it went on a manhunt to kill they father
derek and my boy had an unusual friend
it put me on doing what i gotta do for revenge
dereks coming home now, and i know hes gunna get it
and i know he will be looking for me with a biscuit
not hard to find, i got the techs in handy
im in his house having sex with his family
i got his mom on the bed in cambi
and im with his sister molesting her candy
now we know it all
his friend probably told him and you cant hide nothing in a hood so small
but then it came sunday, bo aint have to work
just humped sally while pams in church
and then derek bust in, bo just froze
white sh*t of his nose, sally gettin her clothes
screams get ready for your funeral bo
reaches to his hip and lets a few of em go
cuz hes packing, and sally starts gasping
holding her stomach, i guess shes just having contractions
bo grabbed his and now they both got heat just gunning
both ignoring the seed thats coming
now sallys in the crossfire screams out stop
holes in the wall now the scenes gettin hot
next 30 seconds on the scene is the cops
yellow tape up now the scenes getting blocked
baracades up, yep you already know yall
ambulacne there, streets filled with patrole cars
cops on the megaphone, come down now
but then it all calmed down somehow
bo comes out, hands showing carrying his arms
derek comes down with little sally in his arms
she has nothing to say, she was hit by a stray
them shots that ricochet, cops take em away
and now some niggas miss em
and it wasnt the guns that killed sally, it was the dumb niggas wit em
when we gunna learn to treat our peoples sacred
from the time we wake kid we all related
when we gunna grow and get rid of the hatred
and this sh*t happens on a regular basis
this sh*t happens on a regular basis
this type of sh*t happens everyday kid

I know it might seem like its all good, but this is what its like in the hood

joe budden puts out a new song which tells a real deep song and shows one of the great things about hip hop....the great rappers always have that great ability to paint a picture with their rhymes. Joe Budden's '3 sides to a story' has him telling a story from 3 different perspectives, ie, one verse from each of the 3 characters. Story about family drama which ends in tragedy. Such a fucking brilliant song, even people that dont like hip hop would probably like this song.

its not as chilling as dance with the devil by immortal technique, but its just as good in story telling.

while 'hip hop fans' are out buying their g-unit albums...they neglect the real ones that are trying to keep this genre alive, and, are killing hip hop.

Why shouldn't other people be allowed to enjoy 50 cent? Because you say it's less superior to this? Personally I don't like to argue/focus on which music taste is 'better', but what people are taking away from the music and the merits of that.

If people are listening to 50 cent, because they like the way his song makes them feel, then I have no problem with it what so ever. The only way your 'genre' will be killed is if there is no longer a market for it.

i am a hip hop fan and i like Lloyd Banks and 50 Cent.

explain how g-unit is "killing hip hop"

mainstream rap has always existed:

1. sugarhill gang had a one hit wonder that broke the charts and popularised hip hop
2. MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice = early 90s = when great albums like Illmatic, Ready To Die, Electrik Circus, The Chronic, Doggystyle were released.

I dont know why people cry about mainstream acts dominating hip hop sales. what do you expect? they have always been there, and they always will. it's nothing special.

appreciation from who exactly? you want those who buy G-Unit and Chingy albums to appreciate Joe Buddens' material? doesnt that mean that you want some 13 year old little kids buuying joe buddens? think about it, it's not going to happen. the fact is, this kind of song will be respected and appreciated by hip hop heads. if it was appreciated by the same types who buy into g-units music, you would be calling buddens a sell out

hmm what i was saying is that this type of song doesnt appeal to a wide audience and the audience it does appeal to isn't as large as the mainstream audience. I was obviously biased in saying that it won't get all the appreciate that it deserves...so yeh i was basically commenting that i doubt this song will do as well as mainstream stuff, which i think sux but thats just the way things are, as you've already established...Of course i wouldn't expect teenagers/G Unit fans to buy this...

I wouldn't call Budden a sell out as such, I'd just be glad that his music would be reaching out to more people and that he gets more recognition for his work.

yeah its pretty silly, people are always like omg stop listening to that music it's shit, but when they start listening to the music you like you get all "omg my fave bands sold out" and have a whinge about how all your favourite artists are now mainstream.

let stupid people listen to stupid music i say.

Also there are lots of people who would say Joe Budden is pop. It depends on your definition of 'real hip-hop'. Anyone signed to a label could be considered mainstream.

yeah murder, selling drugs etc is cool if you've got financial problems according to this song.

speaking of hip-hop. last night was hilliarous. We were at club77 (and on this night they play 80s classics , a bit of indie etc). There was one leb in there. He comes up to the dj and goes "oi bro, can you play us some fifty cent?"

I dont think hes advocating selling drugs nor murder...I interpreted it as him saying that this is the reality..its not bullshit, this is what they really endure in the "hood"...and this is what they do to survive...its kind of the same message as Boyz n the Hood (great movie)

"when we gunna grow and get rid of the hatred
and this sh*t happens on a regular basis...

I know it might seem like its all good, but this is what its like in the hood"

I would claim this is a feature of language, and isn't limited to one genre. I can think of many people who can 'paint a picture' with their use of language.

The poem didn't paint a picture or whatever for me that I don't think exists in most echelons of society.

She loves me, she loves me not
Yeah she loves me not

The fiends need me, I ain't around it, bones ache
Detox, rehab, cold sweat, watch 'em shake
I'm not that genie in a bottle, I'm in a bag
Take one hit, I slide off to the land of the H man
When we first met, I thought you'd never doubt me
Now you tryna leave me, you'll never live without me
Girl, I'm missin' you, come and see me soon
Tie your arm up, put that lighter under that spoon
Now put that needle to ya arm princess, stick it in
Relapse you back bitch, don't ever try that again
All that shit I did for you, I made you feel good
We have a love thing, you treatin' this like its just a fling
What we have is more sacred than a vow or a ring
You broke my heart, you dirty bitch I won't forget what you did
If you give birth, I'll already be in love with your kids
Listen, I don't give a damn if your ass start smokin'
But we have a bond and its not to be broken

We got a love thing, girl you try to leave me
But you need me, can't you see you're addicted to me
We got a love thing, I can take you higher girl
Fuckin' with me, you can be all you can be

Baby you know, on the low your sister be eyein' me
I'm good lookin', so you know, sure she be tryin' me
I heard she bisexual, she fuck with that girl
But boy, oh boy, fuckin' wit me is a whole 'nother world
After that first night, she fall in love, then chased a feelin'
I hung out with Marvin when he wrote "Sexual Healing"
Kurt Cobain even good friends, Ozzy Ozbourne too
I be with rock stars, see you lucky I'm fuckin' with you
I chill with Frankie Lyeman and Jimmy Hendrix crew
See this is new to you, but to me this ain't new
I live a lavished life, listen if the mood is right
Me, you, and your sister can do the do tonight
I never steer you wrong, you're hyper I make ya calm
I be the incentive and reason for you to move forward
Let's make a date, promise me you'll come and see me
Even if it means you have to sell ya mama's TV
I love you, love me back, no one said lovin' me'd be easy

We got a love thing, girl you try to leave me
But you need me, can't you see you're addicted to me
We got a love thing, I can take you higher girl
Fuckin' with me, you can be all you can be

I love you, I got you barefooted on glass, chasin' a dove
That monkey on your back, symbolizes my love
Your friends talk bad about me bitch, you sit there and listen to 'em
Over and over you hurt me, my love is unconditional
They talk to you when you up, you down they got nothin' to say
But when you call, I'll come runnin', I'll always take the pain away
They set you up, to let you down, they crowned you prom queen
Fiddle about me behind your back, they call you a fuckin' fiend
Can we just be alone, so I can kiss and hug you
Push me inside you, no other man can loves you like I do
Call me daddy, I'll make you feel good, I mean real good
I found pleasure in pleasin' you, like a real man should
It was written long before, it was carved in a tree
Forever me and you baby we were meant to be
There's more to life than laughter, what brought us together was fate
And we'll be hand in hand, when you walk through those pearly gates
And to see to that, I'ma do whatever it takes

here's a story that personifies heroin; a drug. the rhyming words paint a picture, and is creative, like joe buddens.

that there is 50 cent's song, on his most recent album. it fits all the criteria you use to classify joe buddens' song as "keeping hip hop alive" and "real hip hop". but according to you "real hip hop" isnt G-Unit. why?

now im not one to be really into 50 cent at all, but everyone brings up these mainstream cats like they're a detriment to the genre. theyre not killing anything. the fact is, and many people dont like this fact, is that hip hop is diverse: there is a little bit of hip hop for everybody. there is party music, socially conscious music, politically opinionated music, angry music, depressing music. hip hop provides it all.

people shit on acts like G-Unit because they think theyre "too mainstream", and put out music thats "killing hip hop". but yet you praise people like the Beastie Boys who rhyme about gibberish and were actually initially criticised for their immensely mysoginistic and provocative lyrics. and Nas, on his debut verse rhymes "swimmin in women like a lifeguard" and "hangin niggas like the KKK" who is now considered as the second coming of Rakim. these are just a couple of examples.

people hop on the bandwagon too much.
