they don't seem to take debating as seriously as I expected. It's just another party.
you'd probably be surprised at the party aspect of debating at all unis, it's not just UTS fronting up for day 2 with shocking hangovers...intervarsity tournaments are just as much about socialising and drinking as competing for everyone involved, even the scary USyd teams...UNSW for example have a rep as 'masters of the dancefloor' which I'm happy to back up after a night dancing with their contingent, and ANU/ADFA and UQ staged scavenger hunts including such challenges as inserting obscure phrases into speeches (which i can't remember due to my drunkenness while discussing this with an ANU debater, and my failure to convince the ADFA guy i was flirting with that he should break the rules and let me have his copy of the document).
And debating's not just another party, it's THE party where suddenly debaters are excessively cool...and lets face it, that's an achievement in itself
But we really do take the debating side of things seriously, it's just that we like to have a little fun along the way.
