ok i know i've asked before, but i'm getting serious about getting my laptop now

basically i want it for uni, so i need something with a bit of memory (especially for powerpoint presentations etc... and as i'm going away for uni i'll have all my music etc. on it)

i've heard from a few people that ebay is the way to go for laptops, as long as they are new (security sealed etc.) but if anyone wants to deter me... feel free

i'm looking at spending about $2500, and hopefully that will include XP home, microsoft office, modem (prob not going to get wireless, as i don't have it at home and i'm pretty sure uni won't have it), and a fair bit of memory... i'm not really fussy on brands, but i probably am looking at either toshiba or compaq (from what i've been told, these are the best)

thanks 4 your help!

That is a pretty nice system for $2550. Especially the graphics card. Very few notebooks come with proper (ie non intel on-board SMA) graphics cards, so keep an eye out for those that do. Although not exactly necessary for Uni duties, they do provide the extra grunt needed for games (you will find some games on your notebook, eventually).

If you want style, elegance and excellent design, go FUJITSU
Sure, they have style, elegance and great design, but they also have "premium" price tags too.

An important note for potential notebook buyers, stay clear of Pentium 4 driven models. Go with the "centrino" ones instead, since its pretty much common knowledge that they are WAY more power efficient.

For a combination of functionality and price, I recommend getting either an Asus notebook or an Aopen one. If you buy the SMH on Saturdays, check the "Icon" liftout, its always full of notebook ads.

Yeah, centrino is important.
Also, AMD have the new "XP-M" models for notebooks.
