ok i need some help here... i need a computer for uni next year (i deferred this year and i'm working) and i'm thinking i'll get a laptop soonish, because it will be useful for my job

i want to spend about $2000 and get something with wireless internet, basically it will be used for just work stuff (emails and office) for this year, and then uni work next year

is $2000 a realistic amount?? and i looked at telstra and their basic internet package (after setup) is about $29.95 a month, which i'm happy to spend, but i don't know if the amount of downloads is enough for what i need (i won't be downloading the huge things like songs/movies etc.., basically just emails and maybe a bit of internet)

2000 sounds reasonable to me, you could even get a slightly older/cheaper laptop to save money then buy one of those wireless internet access cards which you can slot into the laptop since you're just gonna be using the laptop for word processing, the internet and e-mail.

Bad recommendation i personally hate PCMCIA Wi-Fi cards, they'll drain batteries, i mean personally integrated Wi-Fi is good because they have been tested for compliancy and good power management amongst the package. With 2000, you can buy a brand new centrino, which i got for 2300 it's an Acer with 1.4 ghz Centrino, integrated Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and LAN, with DVD burner, 512 ram, 40 gig HDD, 4 in1 Card reader, 15.4 " TFT.

Anyways @ ballerinabarbie, wait till July or so, the new Intel Dothan is going to be released soon it's essentiall Intel Centrino 2, but the thing with this is it's got even increased L2 Cache. Furthermore the CPU speed range starts at 1.7 Ghz and greater. Dell has started deploying it in their laptops. So just wait a bit.

Well yes, maybe a week later than America, Dell's deploying it quick, so it's going to be here in no time.
