Latex (1 Viewer)

I've read the instructions in the 2nd thread on this page about how to use latex.
What I don't get is how to START typing a latex formula.
If I just type the examples I just get plain text.
Its probably a very simple concept, but I can't see any instructions in that thread, nor can I see see anything on a 'post new thread' page which says 'latex'.
Help.

(Also is it just me, or is this site VERY slow?)

To make your text 'TeX', type [ t e x ] in front of the text and then [ / t e x ] when you finish! (remove the spaces)
