Well i got this q from the teacher saying "In what ways has the law recognised de facto relationships?"
i have decided to talk bout the history of it and how it was treated like shit n stuf and then talk about all the acts and cases that have proved that the law has recognised it and then criticise it saying that about all the bad shit in it. But my q is if u guys reckon i could include all that shit on how same sex relationships have become more recognised and now have many of the rights that hetero de facto's have cos i fink same sex couples r de facto's. Any corrections or suggestions?

Don't talk too much about the history of it. It asks how it was recognised, not how it wasnt recognised. Fill it to the brim with cases and Acts (if you need help on those PM me cause this was my best subject and topic within legal studies by far). DO say at least something about samesex relationships and how the Property (Relationships) Amendment Act of 1999 changed the language of the De Facto Relationships Act 1984 (NSW) to non-gender specific language.
Mention the Children (Equality of Status) Act and how it eliminated the status of illegitimate and legitimate children, making those born to de facto couples more accepted and how the law is changing to make birth technology available to de facto and same sex couples aswell.

Thats my advice. How long is the essay supposed to be?

Oh thanks for the advice. It's 10 marks so I guess I'd do 1 page.

same sex couples are considered defactos and thats how they have rights which are for both same sex and heterosexuals eg in wills and when they split up after significant amounts of time etc
