the first part of the question links to how the writer has to adapt his/her writing to the times and how the modern reader always changes.

the use of language in letter 1, it is the chapter that introduces the extended metaphor of the city of invention.

She values literature as she basically says that good literature can teach society about human behaviour and nature. This is in contrast to her dislike of TV, as she thinks people are lazy by simply watching TV to find out about events around the world. The problem with TV, from her perspective, is that it is a perspective or repesentation of only one person, and we as the audience are positioned to see it from the authors perspective. Whereas with literature, you can gain knowledge and ideas how the author intended you to, your own meaning and discuss the meaning other people get from literature. It is a lot more diverse and imaginative.

Hope that helps:) I cant explain myself very well... My teacher does it better.
