I was too lazy to dig up the old thread(s) on this - apologies.

Having no got a canberran licence and registered a cra there I can share the knowledge with anyone who wants to know.

Licence is easy (didn't even have to pay as I'd already got a NSW p2 licence), p-platers only have 4 points - however are unrestricted speed wise (eg 110km/h like evryone else) and have a .02 BAC limit.

A p-off course is availabe (cost about $70 - duration 3 hours) on comopletion you are awarded 4 extra points and no longer have to display p plates. Re-printing of the licence to show this is free.

So total cost was $35 (as I got the p-off course at half-price) and I get 1 extra de-merrit point than I had, a .02 BAC limit and don't have to display p-plates.

Rego was really easy - I did it at the motor-registry's official testing point and they put it over the pits. I'd had a look myself earlier and the steering rack needs replacing (this would have been a fail in NSW) but I'd heard rego was lax in the ACT and my car ran out soon and I was down there.

They noticed the problem but still gave me rego they just wrote down that it should be repaired.

In conclusion ACT licences are cool and pretty much anything will pass rego.

Nice. So I can just rock up with my NSW P1 (Red) licence and they'll swap it over for free? Also, ACT rego includes CTP right? Is transfering rego between states free/cheap or what?

They might charge you for the swap because its only a P1, they didn't charge me because I'd held a licence for 18months and had already paid to upgrade to P2.

ACT rego does include CTP. Overall rego+CTP there is marginally cheaper than in NSW, you'd have to transfer, cancel and muck around abit, my advice is to just wait till your car comes up for renewal and do it then that way you don't loose money cancelling CTP.

And if you've had P1 for more than 6months you are still eligible for the p-off course.

So can you hold a NSW licence and ACT rego or vice-versa? Or does the licence and the rego need to be from the same state?

Do you have to be a permanent resident of ACT to have an ACT license? ie i'll be living at home over the summer and other holidays. Or, do i actually need an ACT license if i'm going to have a base in NSW? if i'm on P2 NSW license, do you abide by act's laws (ie the 0.02 BAC)??

sorry about the 20qs! Any help would be great. i tried looking online but their site was utterly useless.

Ziff: Licence and Rego are seperate things. Legally if you or your car are based in another state to where you/it is licensed/registered for more than three months then you have to change over.

However it doesn't have to be done at the same time, my parnter and I both got our licences and her car got registered I'll register mine in March when its NSW rego runs out.

There no law against driving a NSW registered car on an ACT licence or vice-versa.

Omg_a: For all legal/taxation etc purposes you will be a permenant resident of the ACT and so you should legally get an ACT licence.

If you are in the ACT on a NSW licence then I think you are still bound by NSW P2 restrictions - however in practice could probably weedle your way out.

That said there doesn't seem to be a resaon not to get an ACT licence its free (except for optional p-off course), easy and you arn't as restricted.

And when you do come back home in holidays your car doesnt need P-plates, you arnt oblidged to stick to 100 and drink nothing -ever.

Firtsly, would the persion i share this account for stop posting on my behalf!!!
Secondly, All said is correct however, the amount you pay for licence transfer depends on how long you've held it. (i dont think its that long before its free).
