Can somebody show me how to do this. We just started locus.

A point is root 2 units from the line with equation y=x

Why isn't it just y = plus/minus root 2

So locus are the 2 lines parallel to y = x, viz:

y = x - 2 and y = x + 2

Use perpendicular distance formula...

$\sqrt{2}=\frac{|x-y|}{\sqrt{2}} \\\\ |x-y| = 2 \\\\ x-y=2 \,\, or/ \,\, x-y=-2 \\\ y = x-2 \,\, or/ \,\, y = x+2$
