how do you use logs on your calculator? eg. find log2^8

I'm assuming any base is fine. Using log laws, the input into your calculator should be

"8ln2"
that should give you your answer. You can substitute ln (log base e) for log10 (log base 10) it won't make a difference.

the answer should be 3 but i cant get that on my calculator

you mean log28

well you should go by log laws. you should know that

2x = 8

x = 3

or if its harder use the change of base rule

log108/ log102 (at least i think that's what the rule is, correct me if im wrong :p)

edit: it must be the correct way because i put that in the calculator and got 3.
